Last year - whew!

Last school year was such a busy year in the Raider Library; the librarians never seemed to find a moment to blog about what was going on!!

Here were a few highlights:

  • NaNoWriMo - We celebrated National Novel Writing Month in November with many special events, including a writing workshop from author Kay Honeyman and an author visit from NaNoWriMo author Karen Harrington.  Ms. Spikes' eighth graders all participated in the intensive writing project; to keep motivated, these classes also Skyped with NaNoWriMo author Marisa Meyer. Many of these students went on to publish their novels, and they are now available on Amazon.com!

  • Book Fairs - The library hosted two book fairs, a holiday fair December and a summer reading fair in May.  Student Crews and parent volunteers helped us with each of these events.  Both fairs raised money for the library and put new books in the hands of Raiders!

  • Burgers for Books - This year we hosted a new fundraiser.  In-n-Out Burger brought their 18-wheeler to MIS/HPMS on the night of Spring Open House and started frying up their tasty burgers!  A large percentage of the money spent on the delicious burger dinners went to the library for new books!  In-n-Out was an outstanding company to work with on this fund raiser. Funds raised were also contributed to a local charity to help children in need.

  • North Texas Teen Book Festival - The first annual NTTBF took place in March and several of our Raiders traveled together to participate in the fun day.  Over 50 popular young adult authors were in attendance to discuss their writing, participate in panels, interact with their fans, and sign books.  It was such a special day celebrating reading.

  • Poetry Slam - In April, we gathered for our annual slamming of original poetry.  Once again the Raiders shone as they shared their creativity and performance skills.  The audience was in for a very entertaining afternoon, and the judges had a difficult job choosing the top poets!

  • Lone Star Challenge - Many of our readers participated in the 2015 Lone Star Challenge, reading at least 5 or 10 of the books on the 2015 Texas Lone Star Reading List.  The Raiders who read 10 or more of these titles were invited to a build-your-own-sundae party in May to celebrate their reading achievement.

It was an action-packed year, full of great books and good times with the amazing Raider students and staff. We are excited about the new school year and plan to post much more often in the months to come!

Star Wars Reads Day! Celebrate We Did

The library celebrated Star Reads Day on Friday, October 10.  Raiders created Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Chewbacca origami as well as Darth Vader and Yoda thumb doodles.  Other activities included Star Wars trivia, crossword puzzles, mazes, and translating book quotes into "Yoda Speak."

Drawings were held for prizes, and a few lucky winners took home popular Star Wars books.

If you missed the fun or want to try more origami, visit author Tom Angleberger's website for folding instructions on many characters.  If you create a masterpiece, submit it on the site!

Be sure to check out Angleberger's Origami Yoda series and other Star Wars inspired books:

Check out the trailer for Jeffrey Brown's latest book Goodnight Darth Vader coming to the library soon!

Read you must, young Jedis.  Learn you will.

Welcome back, Raiders!

Hope you had a great summer full of fun and fabulous books!  We have some exciting news to share:

1.  BIG CHANGE!  We will no longer be charging library fines!  Hooray!  We know we can trust you to get your books in on time without the hassle of pesky fines.  Also, Raiders are doing a better job of renewing books.  So keep it up!

2.  7th & 8th graders:  We've made some changes to our book clubs.  We will now be hosting LUNCH BUNCHES!  Every month we'll have a monthly book selection.  Readers who read the selection can get a ticket to the monthly LUNCH BUNCH meeting.  There will be one during both A & B lunches.  On the day of the meeting, readers can bring their lunch to the library to eat and discuss the book with other readers. Then, we'll do the whole thing again the next month!

The first Lunch Bunch book selection is:
The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

The first Lunch Bunch  meeting is:
Wednesday, September 17

Hope you'll join us!

3.  Start the year off with a SHELF-ie!  Take a pic with a book you've #Read or you'd like #ToRead.  We'll post these on the library windows.

Stop by the library to say hello and to check out a new book for the new year.  Have a great start, Raiders!

Library Talk

Our amazing 7th & 8th grade Library Advisory Board came up with the idea of hosting a library talk show to spotlight library events.  They wrote the script and, with the help of the incomparable Dr. Brad Schwall, filmed and directed the first episode.  Here is the debut of Library Talk:

Here is a behind-the-scenes shot of the filming:

Be on the lookout for episode 2!
